SHOWGIRLS is like the RMS Titanic of cinema. It was gigantic, ambitious, newsmaking, and sank horribly, killing hundreds (well, maybe dozens) of innocent careers along with it. Hugely infamous for both its NC-17 rating and Saved by the Bell star Elizabeth Berkeley in a lead role that would take her from straight-A student to Vegas dancer, SHOWGIRLS reigns supreme as a major movie misfire.
With all of its stilted drama, a script that was cursed from the start, and Berkeley’s painful to watch over-acting, this film is a slow motion cinematic trainwreck taking place over 131 minutes of weird-looking lingerie and bad makeup.
In a year that also brought CONGO, WATERWORLD and CUTTHROAT ISLAND, there seemed to be a hex on big movies going belly up. But with SHOWGIRLS, it’s as if the writers and producers dedicated themselves to making a film that is not only cliché but embarrassing, like a greatest hits of bad movie ideology and tropes.
Of course, all of this is terribly entertaining to watch. While SHOWGIRLS is a failure when viewed with an earnest critical lens, it did find its own success among folks who take amusement in seeing just how hilariously bad the whole picture is. Some bad movies are just plain poison and are not fit for viewing in any manner. SHOWGIRLS, with all of its bad ideas and worse executions, somehow managed to be great fun to behold, only with expectations nonexistent and tongue firmly in cheek!
