Continuing the tradition of box office smashes obsessed with natural disaster, SAN ANDREAS plays to the well-accepted fact that the West Coast of the US is at high risk for a monumental earthquake. Giant quakes ravage all of California and much of Nevada, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who plays a Los Angeles firefighter, never puts his family obligations on the backburner and spends the whole movie rescuing his estranged wife and daughter. We see our hero navigate disaster by helicopter, plane, truck, and boat, complete with skydiving and underwater rescue.
The whole point of this epic calamity is that no amount of strife and adversity can extinguish the human spirit, and the will to keep a family together. As great Californian cities crumble around our characters, the rescue story unfolds with a script about as eloquent as The Rock’s classic wrestling dialogue.
